French press
Full-bodied coffee with no paper filter. Forgiving and simple.
- Ratio
- 1:15
- Grind
- Coarse
- Time
- 4 min + 5 min rest
The French press steeps the coffee in the water and then holds the grounds back with a metal mesh. The result is rich and full-bodied. Waiting a little before you pour keeps it clean.
You need
- A French press
- 30 g of coarsely ground coffee for 450 ml of water
Steps
- Add the coffee and the hot water. Stir, put the lid on, and wait 4 minutes.
- Stir the crust on top gently and scoop off the foam with a spoon.
- Wait another 3–5 minutes. The fine particles sink.
- Push the plunger down only a little, just below the surface, and pour slowly.
Common mistakes
- Fine grind. It passes through the mesh and makes the cup muddy.
- Pressing hard to the bottom. It stirs up the sediment. You only need the mesh to hold the grounds back.
- Leaving coffee in the press. It keeps brewing. Pour it all, or move it to a thermos.
